if i wanted to join a "federation" i would watch star wars
warm regards,
facebook
Re: Welcome to Mastodon!
its a weird place. the 'federated' timeline is just 'heres all the posts on all the instances your instance can see' instead of 'here's shit you actually chose to follow.' i had media warnings off when i first started which i do not recommend, saw some fairly disgusting shit that on twitter i'd never come across because i'd never follow someone who posts that
the more limited timeline that's just people you follow specifically is like twitter basically so thats fine. but the 'fediverse' thing is either useless because you're seeing shit in languages you dont read or on subjects you dont care about, or if you have media warnings off its like, where is the bleach for my eyes.
i do like the much higher character limit, it lets people make short blog posts if they want to.

Re: Welcome to Mastodon!
After I checked it out again, I got off mastodon.social to a much smaller server (or instance) called assemblag.es that seems to mostly be STS academics ("I do research at the intersection of …") and multimedia artists who are quite fun to chat to.
This means the "federated" timeline is much slower-paced, better behaved and chilled out I guess, certainly no bleeding-eyes horrors on there and it moves quite sedately.
So far I'm enjoying it, it reminds me of social media from before more sophisticated timelines were developed, it's just nerds posting links to things that are vaguely interesting. No "characters of the day" and not much drama, it's quite funny watching all the Twitter clout-chasers claim they are leaving the platform because it's too complicated or they're facing harassment, when I reckon half the reason is it's simply not set up to concentrate attention on content that generates "engagement" the way they want.
Anyway I'm @attentive@assemblag.es if you are looking

Re: Welcome to Mastodon!
The big fediverse nerds act like its an easy thing, but I had such a hard time picking a server to hitch onto! I ended up on indieweb.social because I didn't want to get stuck in a place with a single hobby focus or a single identity focus. Instead it's a place where most people have similiar ideas about *how* to present that information.
So yeah, @settinger@indieweb.social check it out! still noooooo clue how to pick servers for my other internet identities lol

Still enjoying the "fediverse", the whole thing's like a mix of LJ and Twitter. Might even be my way off Twitter after all these years … that'd be sweet.
